  • Our brain is mapping the world. Often that map is distorted, but it's a map with constant immediate sensory input.

About Us

The Worldmapper project was initiated by a group of academics at the University of Sheffield in collaboration with Mark Newman of the University of Michigan in 2005. Its initial outcome was www.worldmapper.org. Our website has received over 175 million hits since its launch in 2007 with users from all over the world. International press coverage about us includes mentions in TIME magazine, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Rheinische Post and Der Spiegel amongst many others. Worldmapper is special because of the novel type of maps we make, based on the algorithm developed by Gastner/Neman. These graphics are called density-equalizing cartograms. They are unique cartographic images distorting the world according to any type of quantitative data. In the population map, for example, the hugely populated region of East and South Asia stands out compared to other parts of the world, and large countries by their geographic size, such as Russia, are considerably smaller than they appear on conventional maps. This image completely changes again when switching to other topics, resulting in hundreds of new views of the world that we have created over the past years.
With the academic project no longer having any funding, we have founded Worldmapper Ltd. as a spin-off with which we are offering our expertise and services to everyone and are now looking to secure new funding for updating and relaunching the main project website. Please get in touch if you want to support us or if you are interested in a collaboration for your own Worldmapper- and geospatial data visualisations.
